Cadbury might have to taste a bitter chocolate for itself. The premium chocolate maker has been accused of non-payment of tax, amounting to nearly 36 million US dollars.
The government of India, has alleged a tax evasion case on Cadbury India Limited, a unit of global snacks maker Mondelez International Inc. Directorate General of Central Excise Investigation (DGCEI) has been reported of detecting two cases of tax evasion which amount to Rs. 213 crores by the different units of the Cadbury India.
Minister of State for Finance S S Palanimanickam has said that the Cadbury India, Himachal Pradesh, has been investigated for evading an excise duty of about Rs 200 crore.
He has also said that it is involved in another case of evading Rs 13.43 crores of Service tax, and that the case had been adjudicated and a demand of Rs 11.75 crore was confirmed along with a penalty of equal amount.
The company has however maintained that it is fully co-operating with the investigations of tax evasion.
After all, chocolates may not be so sweet for Cadbury’s this time!
