Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade has been asked to leave the United States while she is granted complete immunity. However she has been indicted by a jury in New York.
Devyani has been reported as boarding plane to India as she was granted full immunity by the United States under the India-US Headquarters agreement.
However she has been indicted by a federal grand jury in New York with charges of visa fraud and making false statements.
The United States has reported that it has accepted India’s request to accredit her to the United Nations . One of the US officials was reported to have been saying that “It would be almost unprecedented for the U.S. to deny such a request unless the diplomat was a national security risk.”
With this the case of Devyani Khobragade has finally seen a resolution.
“She will be arrested if returned to US”
Manhattan US attorney Preet Bharara has indicated that she has been indicted by the grand jury, but has been granted the diplomatic immunity. Bharara has also said in a letter to the district judge that Devyani will be arrested and made to face the trial, if she returns to the US without diplomatic immunity.
“All charges are baseless” – Devyani dismisses
Devyani however dismissed that the charges levied against her are baseless and false. She was looking forward to prove them wrong. She also indicated that she would take steps to see to it that her family and her children would not be affected with this incident.
Tensions in foreign relations had escalated
The alleged arrest of Devyani Khobragade by the US authorities on charge of false statements and underpayment of wages to domestic labour, had sparked off a big tension in the relationship between the two nations. The Indian authorities had also resorted to various measures to protest against the alleged strip search and cavity search for its diplomat in the United States. India argued that the diplomat should be given immunity and all the charges against her be dropped. However the United States refused to drop charges against Devyani.
The Indian authorities had recently ordered the US to shut down its ACSA, a community club in New Delhi. US authorities in India were asked to shut down all the commercial activities.
